Chapter One

The Press

In 1956, upon publishing her first novel at the age of 16, Berthe Grimault became a celebrity. A poor farmer from France with limited education, Berthe had worked with the postman in her village, Eliezer Fournier, to transcribe her imaginative stories. Berthe’s life became the subject of many articles in the international press. The first movement of Berthe: “Pig girl among the debs” presents the captions found on the back of the photographs featured in this chapter.
