Chapter Three

Berthe in Paradise

After her stay at The Grove, Berthe penned a story about her time at the finishing school, Berthe in Paradise. Chapter three consists of excerpts from the novel, her surreal and conflicting version of her stay. Orr-Ewing becomes Shrimati, a prodding principle who insists that Berthe is incapable of writing her novels. Berthe soon discovers that she is the subject of Shrimati’s grand experiment, an attempt to transform the uncouth teenager into a debutant.
